Jamaica's Reggae Marathon
When one thinks track and field one immediately thinks Jamaica. This country has an incredible history of spectacular athletes. This is why the first time I heard about the Jamaica Reggae Marathon in Negril my ears perked up and my secret love for running races was re-ignited. (I was a champ in junior high school, winning first in several provincial meets and several long distance running races).
The Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K race is scheduled for December 7th, 2013. Their slogan "Come for the run. Stay for the fun." sums up the experience to be had perfectly. This year I may be watching from the sidelines, but next year maybe I will be in it... We'll see how my training goes.
This marathon stands on its own for location, atmosphere, and good ol' fashioned fun.
The location puts you in the heart of Jamaica's Negril, a beautiful town full of things to do and places to stay for every budget. The run is on a closed road and Jamaica's organizers go the extra mile (no pun intended) for the participants by having an aid station every mile with electrolyte and water in plastic pouches, not annoying cups. Reggae music is played all along the way, which adds a special touch of authenticity and amusement. There is a meaningful mile marker known as Bob's Marker which has an inspiring quote from the inspiration artist to help your mental game towards the end of the race. And a great advantage here is that when you are done, you can continue running straight into the ocean to cool off!
Marathon runners, the Reggae Marathon is the perfect opportunity to combine vacation and passion. Jamaica is one of the most sought after destinations because the people are friendly, the island is absolutely beautiful (mountain ranges, urban culture, and amazing beaches all in one), activities endless, and food like nowhere else on earth.
Entries are taken up to December 3rd 2013, so for those of us who like to plan things last minute, this event caters perfectly to us.
It is certainly one of the best and most exciting vacation marathons (arguably) in the world, where athletes of all levels come together in the spirit of Jamaica's Reggae.
