About Taigh Na Mara
Taigh na Mara is the Gaelic translation of House by the Sea. This lovely Bed and Breakfast offers two guest bedrooms, both able to sleep up to three people in each. Located in the seaside village of Kuaotunu on the Coromandel Peninsula, Taigh na Mara is in a convenient location for exploring the local area and the wider region of Coromandel. A hugely popular destination for both New Zealanders and overseas visitors, the Coromandel has something for everyone. It’s a great place for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful beaches, or if you like to be a bit more active, there are many opportunities for bush walks, water based activities, golf, or biking to name just a few. Taigh na Mara lies 17 kilometres from the town of Whitianga (about a 15-20 minute drive), and 27 kilometres from Coromandel town (about a 30 minute drive). The beach is just a very short two minute walk across the road. While you can't see the beach from the house, you can hearit.
Taigh Na Mara was purpose built as a bed and breakfast in 2003 by it's previous owners. This beautiful home was architecturally designed, with much thought being given to the layout of the house as a bed and breakfast. The two guest bedrooms located at one end of the house are spacious and sunny, with their own bathrooms, private entrances, and outdoor seating areas. The lounge, dining and kitchen areas offer an open and welcoming feel, and lead out to a covered outdoor seating and barbecue area that can be used all year round. The shared lounge has a cosy wood fire for winter, and a piano that guests are welcome to play. Mementoes from your host Carol’s travels can be seen throughout the lounge. You can be assured of a very warm welcome.
Your host at Taigh Na Mara is Carol Blair. Carol was born in the Orkney Islands off the north of Scotland and chose the name for the Bed and Breakfast in acknowledgement of her Scottish heritage. While having mostly lived in Auckland until moving to the Coromandel in February 2015, Carol is no stranger to Kuaotunu, her parents having lived here for 30 years. Her great passions in life are travel and cooking. She has travelled extensively, taking in cooking courses whenever the opportunity presented itself and is thrilled to now be able to share this with others, in a corner of the world that she feels is hard to beat. Gardening and kayaking are other keen interests and Taigh Na Mara also allows her to indulge in these activities. Carol is a social worker by profession and has worked particularly in the fields of health, and loss and grief. Carol would love to welcome you to Taigh Na Mara and share what she and this very special part of the world have to offer.
