Learn to surf, make lifelong friends, and enjoy the tropical beach lifestyle. While we're not a resort, we offer many of the comforts of one. Along with the relaxed vibe of a surf camp for 'grown ups'.
Our location in the heart of the Hermosa "surf zone" gives you the freedom to take full advantage of the best conditions. Check the tides, grab your board, let's surf!
Both Mike and Frank are passionate about surfing, about surfing in Playa Hermosa, and about ensuring that during your stay at Shaka you experience the lifestyle they love - warm water, great waves, fresh local produce, breathtaking sunsets, and the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure. And they're just waiting to share all this with you.
Co-owner of Shaka since its inception in 2008, Frank grew up in Florida and began surfing at the age of 12. “Surfing is not just a sport to me. Rather, it's a lifestyle”. He is passionate about helping families with children in wheelchairs and does this through the OHG adaptive surf camps held several times a year at Shaka.
When not in Costa Rica, Frank lives in Aspen, Colorado with his wife and two daughters. He describes building and opening Shaka as his "dream come true". Frank takes care of the online booking system. He's your first 'port-of-call' for your vacation, availability, and travel enquiries.
Mike became co-owner of Shaka with Frank in 2013. Having previously lived in Costa Rica for many years and also volunteering at Shaka, when the opportunity came up to buy into the business Mike said, 'of course!' with little hesitation.
As the onsite manager of Shaka, Mike is a font of knowledge about everything you might need to know to make your stay here quite simply, awesome. From surfing, to touring, to dining out and socialising, there isn't much Mike can't tell you about. And if he doesn't know it, he'll go out of his way to find out about it for you. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Mike worked as a stonemason for many years before quitting his job to go travelling and surfing the world. He found his way to Costa Rica, then to Shaka, and the rest is history.
Nestled in a tropical garden of native trees and wildlife our spacious villas provide the perfect environment to relax after a day of surfing. Designed by local architects, the villas provide views of the gardens as well as the comforts of modern amenities such as air-conditioning and hot water. Not to mention your own private hammock. Unwind in the privacy and tranquility around you. Why not pass the afternoon relaxing in your hammock, drinking from a freshly-opened coconut?
The Shaka communal area, an open-air palm-roofed rancho, is also an ideal place to unwind until you’re ready to paddle out again. Plug in your ipod to listen to your own music or pass the afternoon listening to the sounds of nature around you. Whether you're a solo traveller or coming with a family member or loved one, you'll find our villas spacious enough to suit your needs.
All meals at Shaka are prepared by our chef, José Muñoz, using locally-sourced produce. Before your morning surf session you'll enjoy a delicious sunrise snack of fresh fruit and granola. On return, José will serve a hearty dish of a typical Costa Rican breakfast including gallo pinto, omelettes, tortillas, and banana pancakes. For dinner you'll be served a daily special using fresh fish, poultry, meats, and locally grown vegetables. You will enjoy a range of typical Costa Rican specialties which will keep you feeling full but light and energized during all of your daily adventures.
If you have specific dietary requirements simply let us know so that we can tailor the menu to suit your needs. On Saturday we give José the night off and you'll have the opportunity to sample one of the local restaurants. There are a couple of options within walking distance from Shaka plus an array of alternatives a taxi ride away in the township of Santa Teresa. The variety on offer will suit any budget from a cheap and tasty taco to gourmet dining.
All Shaka guests are welcome to join in the daily yoga classes with our experienced yoga teachers. We offer a Vinyasa style yoga practice in which movement is synchronized with the breath. Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. This style is sometimes also called flow yoga, because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. The breath acts as an anchor to the movement as you to flow from one pose to the next in time with an inhale or an exhale.
At the end of a tiring week of surf, restorative sessions are focussed on the breath, with gentle movement and hands-on adjustments. Perfect for strengthening and stretching tired surf muscles. There is usually a mix of abilities and classes are tailored to guests' needs. Feeling pumped and ready to go? Request an active session. Tired after a heavy week of surf? Ask for something more gentle. Quite simply, we’re here for you.
The region of Santa Teresa and the Nicoya Peninsula offers an abundance of activities for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers alike. These include full-day excursions visiting local islands for some sport fishing, scuba diving, or snorkelling, or afternoon sightseeing to closer-to-home destinations. Some of the more popular of these include zip-lining through the treetops in Mal País, horse riding along the Playa Hermosa beach, visiting the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, hiring a quad bike, or hiking to the waterfalls near the quaint village of Montezuma. Taking in a sunset from the infinity pool at the resort Vista de Olas in Mal País is also a guest-favorite. If you're after something even more relaxing, ask us to book you a massage. Time this right to catch the sunset over Playa Hermosa at the same time!
