Our light lunch menu of sandwiches, soup, shrimp tacos and quesadillas can be enjoyed in the dining room, on the beach or taken with you on a day trip. Beer, speciality drinks and wine are available in the afternoon along with great music
Many guests enjoy relaxing in our Lounge area where we feature a wide selection of music, books on the local birds and animals, as well as the Mayans and travel information. This is the meeting space for groups to use for presentations or discussions.
The Costa Maya is unspoiled by large development and focuses on ecotourism and bio-diversity. With the jungle behind us and the sea at our doorstep, nature envelopes Balamku. At Balamku, you will want to relax and be with the beauty of nature. There are countless varieties of birds (orioles, jays, flycatchers, hummingbirds and sea birds, especially) many butterflies and interesting iguanas to observe as you walk/hike in our area.
Just over one hour from Balamku is a beautiful small ruin that can be walked and admired in 1 - 1/2 hours. It is a significant example of Mayan ruins with temples to climb and exposures to the original red wall of the ancient temple. You can drive, take a taxi or go with a guided tour from Mahahual.
Heading south on 307 highway you will find Bacalar, a town without a lot of tourism on a magnificent blue lagoon. Fresh water swimming, rapids to explore, Cenote Azul, the fort and lunch are all part of this adventure to Bacalar. It is 1/2 hour from Chacchoben ruin.
Visit the capital of Quintana Roo for the day! “Chet” is 1-1/2 hours from Mahahual and easy to drive but take a map with you to find all the sites. The highlight will be the Mayan Museum on Ave. Heroes, the main street. But also enjoy this typical Mexican city with its shops and people going about their business. The Mercado near the museum is interesting as is the lovely road by Chetumal Bay. Calderitas is nearby - a weekend “resort” town for the people who live in Chetumal.
Kohunlich, Dzibanche Ruins
These 2 significant ruins are about 2.5 hours from Mahahual - just west of Chetumal on the Escarcega highway, 186. You can see both of them in one day from Balamku if you get up early!
Sian Kaan – Punta Herrero beach north of Mahahual
North of Mahahual, there are beaches to explore near Placer and Uvero. But if you keep going north, you can enter the south end of Sian Kaan and drive to Punta Herrero for beach adventure. There is a town and restaurant along the way.
Xcalak and River Trips
About 45 min south of Mahahual is the little village of Xcalak. From there, you can arrange for a boat to take you to Ambergris in Belize for the day, Rio Hondo river trip, or fishing.
Snorkeling & Diving In Mahahual
Besides our reef for snorkeling with our kayaks, we can arrange a boat for snorkeling on other reefs or diving.
This world famous atoll has some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world. Mahahual is the closest town to Chinchorro therefore many folks come here to visit the spectacular “island” and dive or snorkel the surrounding reef.
Fishing – Deep Water Or Fly Fishing
Learn to fly fish on our flats or go to the lagoons close by or go outside the reef for deep water fishing - all available here in Mahahual.
