Belize cave has deep roots in Mayan culture

Only discovered in 1989 this Belize cave has deep roots in Mayan culture. Within you will find a magnificent archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. These relics date back to a thousand years ago. It is said the skeletons belong to children and adults who were sacrificed to the rain God.

The interior is made of incredible limestone that has lamented itself along the walls and even on some of the skeletons and pottery, adding to the fascination.

Many local Belizeans believe this cave holds mystic properties. Perhaps it is simply the awe of history, or maybe it truly does hold a power, but whatever the case, there is an energy that you can't quite put your finger on.

If you are visiting during rainy season be prepared for a muddy hike. No matter the time of year though, this outing is not for the faint of heart. About an hour by bus or car and then another 1.5 km hike to get here. Good footwear is essential on this excursion, as well as layers (long sleeve shirt and pants) as it can be chilly if you get wet. It takes about a 45 minute hike to get to ATM, so visitors should be in decent shape.

It is highly recommended to use a guide when visiting, as not only are they knowledgeable about the history and artifacts, but they know the way well, and Belize is not the safest to be trekking around by oneself.
