About 740 mountain gorillas still remain in their natural habitat and are protected within the park. Currently there are 8 habituated gorilla families that can be visited: Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Susa, Kalisimbi, Umubano, Hirwa and Kwitonda. In addition to the gorillas, Volcanoes National Park also includes other species such as the golden monkey, 200 bird species, buffalos and elephants. Akagera supports a typical savannah fauna dominated by a variety of antelope and plains predators. Nyungwe offers visitors a good chance of viewing chimpanzees and 400-strong troops of colobus monkeys - the largest arboreal primate troop in Africa today.
